Phase One: The Decision
The most important decision you will make related to your remodeling project will be the contractor you choose to hire. Your contractor is the captain of the ship, and he or she will inevitably affect the look and feel of your project’s outcome. You will be spending a lot of time with this person. They will help you plan the project, pick out supplies, listen to your complaints, give you updates, and, ultimately, turn your remodel from a concept into reality.
In other words, choosing a remodeling contractor is not a decision to be taken lightly. There are some quality contractors out there but also a lot of people who call themselves contractors but don’t have the experience and certifications to back up their claims. Be very careful with who you choose. A project bid is only one factor to consider. Make sure the contractor you are considering has experience, insurance, good references, a strong portfolio and is someone you feel comfortable spending a lot of time with.
I recommend that anyone considering a remodeling project should contact multiple contractors and get at least three different bids. In a previous blog article, I wrote about why it is important to pick the right kind of contractor for your project. Make sure that any remodeler you are considering has done the type of project you want. For instance, if you want to remodel your kitchen, you may want to consider hiring a contractor who, like K B Design and Remodeling, specializes in kitchen and bath remodels. Bringing in a specialist goes a long way toward guaranteeing a quality result.
Take your time in choosing your contractor. Gather all the relevant information. Look carefully through a potential contractor’s portfolio, and call the references. Picking a good contractor will make the difference between a good result and disappointment.
